We have surfable waves year round here in Waikiki. However, summer time is when the South Shore of Oahu gets great waves. Sometimes we get lucky and have big swells in the winter.

Our staff photographer Joseph Libby is constantly looking for ways to take better photos of our surf lesson students.
In order to get these photos, Joey paddled out a big Stand up Paddle board with his land camera in a case. If a wave were not knock him over, his camera would be ruined.
Pretty brave.

Usually when Joey is in the water he uses his fish-eye camera.

The hotels of Waikiki in the background.

comin at ya.

Even the wipeouts look cool.

Joey was lucky enough to make it back to the beach without getting water on his camera.

Waikiki is the best place to learn to surf. The waves roll into shore allowing students to take their time when getting to their feet.
Here at Hans Hedemann Surf School we teach 2 ways to stand up. The Easy Way, which is a 3 step process. And the Cool Way, where we teach how to pop up.
Our staff photographer, Joseph Libby, swam out and got a sequence of the Easy Way to stand up.

The more points of contact on the board the better. Both hands are on the board, she is on one knee with her front foot between her hands.
MOST IMPORTANT: She is looking UP !!!

Both feet are flat on the board. (no tip toes). Still both hands holding steady. Hands are the last thing to let go of before standing. Never jump up from one knee.
STILL her head is UP looking at the trees. AND she is smiling. Surfing is FUN, not work. Smile and enjoy.

Perfect. Head up, knees bent. Also, she is careful to keep her back arm forward. Always ready to go back down and grab the board if she gets unsteady.
This is how we teach lessons at HH Surf.
So easy your grandma could do it.
Come see for yourself.

During a two hour surf lesson, some people are able to get the basics down so well that they can try more advanced moves on a surfboard.
In this case, two parents went tandem surfing with their children.

All four on one wave.
As they surf closer to the cameraman it is difficult to get them all in the same frame.

Father and son surfing.

Mother and daughter.

Finally, as the sun hid behind a cloud and James hid behind the son >>>
the whole family got a great photo.
Just need a little Photo-shop to hide the instructor.
Such an amazing family surf photo.

Hans Hedemann Surf School has our own surf spot within the Waikiki area. Just a short walk from the Park Shore Hotel.

We also rent SUP boards and short boards.

Doesn’t look like Waikiki >>>> But it is. Near the Honolulu Zoo in Kapiolani Park.
